Tyn Church

You came to one of the best highlights in Old Town - Tyn Church. It looks like stones monster among small colorful houses.

Dark colour of stones - it’s s chemical reaction. Sandstone, from which is made this church and large numerous of statues everywhere in the centre, contains iron. And due the oxidation it becomes dark.

In gothic period wanted to show people how they are small comparing to God. That’s why the towers of churches built so high. To be standing before such tall towers, human was aware degree of god’s greatness.

Churches of gothic period did not built up. But step by step only. First was built altar part, the most important part, to make possible to lead a worships. And over time the builders continue construction to the entrance with towers. To finish this church was taken 200 years.

It is seen small stones on the wall of church, fixed by special material: clay, lime and raw eggs. It was believed, that raw eggs will hold the stones forever. All citizens were obliged to bring raw eggs to the construction site. For this they used to walk to the forest and devastated birds nests.

How people’s opinions have changed over time, isn’t it? After all, today we use completely different materials. Although not all buildings can stand for as long as these ancient ones.
