The statue of Cyril and Methodius

Cyril and Methodius were Christian missionaries grom Greece. Upon the request of Czech prince they come on our country in second part of 9th century. They brought Christianity to Slavic people. The very first rulers, who had converted to Christianity were princ Borivoy and princes Ludmila, later recognized as a saint- the grandmother of saint Wenceslas. As Slavic had no letters at that time, then Cyril and Methodius created a new alphabet for local people, known as Glagolitic script, based upon Greek characters.

But Salzburg’s archbishop was against it, was opposited to use new language and that’s why the worships continued to be conducted here in Latin.

By the way, almost all statues on the bridge are copies. They made from the sandstone too, like the originals. Because of very soft material, which could be destroyed by weather, original statues were hidden in museums. A dark statue means the copy is old, and a light color of the statue means the copy is new.
