Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral

Nestled in the heart of Prague 2, the Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral stands as a monumental testament to resilience, faith, and freedom.

Originally constructed in the 1730s as a baroque church dedicated to Charles Borromeo, it was later reconsecrated in 1935 to honor the revered Slavic saints, Cyril and Methodius, who were instrumental in bringing Christianity to the Slavic peoples.

This architectural gem, with its intricate facade and solemn interiors, not only serves as a place of worship but also as a beacon of Czech national pride and identity. The cathedral’s history is intertwined with one of the most dramatic episodes of the Second World War: Operation Anthropoid. In 1942, the cathedral became a refuge for Czechoslovak paratroopers who had been parachuted into the country by the British RAF with a mission to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, one of the main architects of the Holocaust and the acting Reich-Protector of Bohemia and Moravia.

The catacombs beneath the cathedral provided a hidden shelter for the paratroopers after the successful assassination, which led to one of the most significant acts of resistance against Nazi occupation. The subsequent siege and battle at the cathedral on June 18, 1942, resulted in the heroic but tragic deaths of the paratroopers, who chose suicide over capture, turning the cathedral into a hallowed ground of resistance.

Today, the Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral not only serves as a place of spiritual solace but also houses the National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror. This museum, located within the cathedral’s crypt, showcases an evocative collection of photographs, documents, and personal items belonging to the Czechoslovak heroes, telling the story of their bravery, the assassination, and the brutal repercussions that followed, including the razing of the villages of Lidice and Ležáky.

This historical shrine invites visitors to ponder the complex layers of courage, sacrifice, and the relentless pursuit of freedom woven into the fabric of Czech history. As one walks through the hallowed halls of this cathedral, they are not only stepping into a religious sanctuary but also traversing the corridors of history, where every stone and artifact whispers tales of valor, despair, and hope. The Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral stands not merely as a building but as a monumental chronicle of the indomitable spirit of the Czech people and their enduring fight for liberty and justice.
