Powder Tower

In front of you there is Powder Tower.

It’s dark, because it’s built from the sandstone, which contains iron. And due the oxidation this material becomes dark.

In Central Europe, and Czech also, there is a huge deposit of sandstone, and of course, always was built from material, of which there is a lot. That’s why a large number of old buildings, that you will see in the old part of the city, are built from sandstone.

Previously here was a entrance to the city. And tower got name after city Kutna Hora, which is located nearby Prague and where led a road from this gate. High walls were standing on a sites of the gate to protect citizens from enemies. Over time it was decided to remove the walls for expanding city, but tower was left. From 15 century inside was a storage of guns powder there, that’s why the tower was renamed as Powder Tower.

Now on the top, there is quite nice view point, the price of ticket is around 6 euro
