Old Town Hall
0:00 / 1:15Old Town Hall
On the left side of the clock, three buildings located next to each other are the new town hall of the old city. Currently there is a museum here - the interiors of the town hall and the dungeon of the Old Town. A most interesting museum! And I highly recommend you visit it. You will see underground houses, shops, wells and a prison too. There is a theory that the city was often flooded in the past. Because Vltava river is nearby. Therefore, the city hall decided to artificially increase the level of buildings. The entire old part of the city was covered with soil and stones, and a "new" Old City was built on the surface. But according to another theory, people used to prefer to live underground, as it was much warmer and less difficult to build a home. But while historians argue which version is more correct, you can enjoy the hidden ancient dungeons.
Part of the tour includes a visit to the top of the clock tower, which offers magnificent views of the city.
I also recommend coming for a tour of this town hall 10 minutes before the performance on the clock. In this case, you will be able to see the figures of the apostles, but from the reverse side of the astronomical clock. It’s quite interesting to watch them look out the windows, but from the other side.
